There is a soul of every forest; a single heartbeat that keeps the forest alive. It would be improper to refer to this soul as a ruling factor or as some have resorted to- a “god”. Most inhabitants of the forest have taken to referring to this soul as the “Nymph”. She is the guardian of the forest, though not in the way you might expect.
The Nymph is ruthlessly dedicated to allowing the natural order of the forest to continue as it should. Interfering with growth or death or life would be out of character for her; she is better known for destroying those that interfere. By destroying, I mean the most magical and violent of destruction to their wellbeing.
The Nymph is known for taking many forms. Her most logical is that of a fairy-like creature that ominously monitors the forest day and night. Other forms include: an innocent fawn, a wounded fish, a regal elephant, a bored tiger, a sickly bear, and a proud owl. The soul of the forest is very often the form of the owl.
The Nymph was unpredictable and sometimes irrational. She has been known to intervene compassionately to the benefit of a sickly deer while smiling coldly as a healthy and happy bear starved to death. Her behavior was unpredictable at best. The receiving end of her wrath was the worst that the forest could imagine.
As Chester and the Alliance traveled deep into the forest toward the barren tree where the Nymph has been commonly observed, he searched his mind for an answer to the Sasquatch conundrum. Killing the beast was not an option to Chester as his nature would not allow it. That being said, he couldn’t allow the fairies to become extinct either; the result of allowing the Sasquatch to live.
He was now having regrets about being so anxious to volunteer for such a position as he was currently employed. Talo had foreseen this. The rest of the Alliance was convinced that killing the Sasquatch was the only answer and Chester was struggling to rebut that. His latest diversion was to suggest that the Nymph should give a blessing to the mission. Of course, this was insane because of the unpredictability of the Nymph but because he was the leader, to the Nymph they traveled.
The Elves traveled comfortably in the underbelly carriage of the deer. Their luxurious accommodations featured “thinking chairs” and tables and other accessories. The Pixie traversed in much the same way as the fairies; with a complete disregard for physics, gravity, and the like. She, Faye, darted up then down, then stream lined ahead and then back again with the grace of a hummingbird. Chester swooned.
The Woodlings were perched comfortably aloft birds; Chester on his barn owl, and Talo atop his small hawk. They flew in smooth swooping and surveying circles. Occasionally, Chester and his owl would land on the branch of a tree and wait for the remaining group; the Dwarf and the Gnome that traveled via the forest floor.
As Chester looked down at the forest below and waited for the group to catch up, he thought hard for a solution to the Sasquatch issue that didn’t involve killing it. He watched the Faye the Pixie flash from perch to perch, pause to lounge casually on a thick cluster of berries as she ate them satisfactorily, and then zip to another perch. Wow, she was amazing. The deer that housed the Elves pounced carelessly through the underbrush, pausing occasionally to nibble on some long grass. The deer’s long ear would stand up as her body stood completely still, her arrowhead tail would flicker, and then she would continue on.
Chester watched this scene unfold from his seat upon the owl resting calmly upon a branch high above the forest floor.
Then he watched the Dwarf; that irrationally scary Dwarf with the ever-smiling Gnome sitting happily upon his shoulder. These two were a peculiar couple. There, a massive Dwarf; limber, agile, quick, and powerful. Then there was the Gnome; small, fat, content, seemingly slow, seemingly peaceful, and above all- happy.
The gnome had a unique ability to pass into other dimensions that housed… who knows where the Gnome went and what it contained, but whatever/ wherever he went to, he made adjustments that affected the present dimension. Most of the adjustments that the Gnome made assisted the Dwarf as he flipped and jumped through the forest; his axe secured in a holster at his side.
Chester watched curiously; usually electing to look away from the Dwarf because of his unexplained fear of the Dwarf, but now he was watching from his perch high above. The Dwarf kicked off a tree and flipped through the air. Only the dot of a red Gnome hat on the Dwarf could be seen from where Chester sat, but clearly it was the gnome.
To Chester’s surprise, not only did the Gnome disappear (as he often did to make adjustments in another dimension, or whatever), but the Dwarf disappeared too, only to reappear a hundred feet away and eating what appeared to be an apple in mid-run.
“What the…” Chester said to himself. It had not yet been observed that the Gnome could transpot others into the other dimension with him.
“Can you leave him there!?” Chester called out instinctually.
Chester looked around mildly embarrassed by his outburst. Everyone had stopped and looked at him. Talo’s hawk landed on the branch beside him. “Chester, man, I know you’re freaked out by the Dwarf, but that’s a little mean.”
“No!” Chester said defensively, “Not the Dwarf… I was talking about the Sasquatch!”
Talo looked at Chester confusingly and shook his head in order to comprehend better. “What?” He managed.
Chester had already mounted his barn owl and flown down towards the now stationary Dwarf and shoulder perched Gnome. The Gnome sat smiling irrationally on the Dwarf’s shoulder.
Chester’s owl landed on a small tree beside the giant Dwarf. Chester let out a chest heaved involuntary “uhhgh”; a sound often made by those overcoming irrational fear.
“You!” Chester said, pointing at the Gnome. The Gnome smiled large and looked at the Dwarf with a confirming nod.
“I agree..” The Gnome began to say.
“You can jump into other- worlds- or… whatever!...” Chester said excitedly.
“And you can bring people with you?”
The Gnome smiled and looked at the Pixie that just landed on a branch near. He smiled larger and nodded more so.
Chester continued- “Could you take the Sasquatch there!?” Chester asked excitedly. “Could you- bring the Sasquatch with you and leave it there! Could you do that!?” Chester looked the Gnome but really didn’t really expect anything other th….
“I agree with him! Aigh, that’s a good Idea…” The Gnome said.
Chester smiled. The Gnome is the answer, he thought to himself.
“The Gnome is the answer!” He said aloud.
